What Each EPA 608 Test Covers: A Study Checklist by Group

Rule text checked on ; next check .

At a glance

Every Section 608 test draws from a core group and a technical group. This checklist lists both, by name, and marks which of the technical areas this site's practice tests reach versus which ones belong to your certifying organization's own material.

On this page

Every Section 608 test is built from the same menu of topics; Appendix D just changes which slices land in which type. This checklist walks through the areas the regulation names, what's covered by this site's practice tests today, and what to leave for your certifying organization's own material.

The core group, asked on every test

Core areaWhere to practice it
Environmental impact of CFCs, HCFCs and substitute refrigerantsCore practice test
Laws and regulationsCore practice test
Changing industry outlookCore practice test

All four certification types answer questions from this group; it's the one part of the test every candidate shares, no matter which equipment class they're being certified on. Every test draws at least twenty-five questions from here, plus the same count from whichever technical group applies to the type being tested (Section 82.161(c)).

The technical groups, one per certification type

Technical areaWhere to practice it
Leak detectionType II practice test
Recovery techniquesYour certifying organization's material
SafetyYour certifying organization's material
ShippingYour certifying organization's material
DisposalYour certifying organization's material

Appendix D names these five areas for the sector-specific groups, and a Type I, Type II or Type III test draws its second half from whichever set matches the equipment class. Universal draws from all three technical groups at once, on top of the shared core.

What this site's saved regulation text doesn't reach

Only one of those five technical areas has a practice test on this site: leak detection, worked through Section 608's own leak-repair rule and the separate 2024 HFC rule on the Type II practice test. The regulation text saved for this project doesn't include recovery equipment standards, required evacuation levels, safety procedures or shipping rules, so those four rows aren't questions this site can write honestly. Treat them as reading for your certifying organization's own course material, not something to expect here.

Universal: everything combined

A Universal candidate doesn't face different material from a Type I, Type II or Type III candidate — the test just adds all three technical groups to the shared core in one sitting, or lets someone build up to it by passing the three separate proctored tests over time. Either way, the same core-plus-technical structure applies; EPA 608 certification types covers how the four types and their pass marks differ.
